Level/Field of Study

This Allan Gray Obis Foundation Scholarship is available to High School students. That is learners in Grade 6. Basically, those who are in financial need, and those who have a curious entrepreneurial mindset. As well as those high School Students who have the potential to excel academically.

Host Nationality

The Allan Gray Obis Foundation High School Scholarship is offered basically in three counties. They include South Africa, Botswana, and Swaziland. Eligible Nationality

The scholarship is available for only South African citizen. The Scholarship is also available to learners entering high school. Learners in Grade 6 may apply.

Scholarship Worth

The scholarship program provides access to quality secondary or high school education. Their goal is to inspire the passion of selected Scholars or Researchers and to develop their potential to become autonomous and high impact entrepreneurs.

The scholarship covers the following elements:

  • Full tuition and boarding fees
  • A monthly allowance (pocket money)
  • A travel subsidy
  • Stationery and prescribed books
  • Toiletries, school uniforms, and leisure clothing
  • Support for extra-mural activities

Scholars also have access to an entrepreneurial or business development program. This guarantees the students continued progress by providing additional business leadership and entrepreneurial development opportunities.

We understand that the transition to a new school can be difficult. The Foundation provides additional support to the Scholars to ensure a smooth and successful transition to their new environments.

Eligibility

For South Africa

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen
  • Candidate must be in Grade 6 this year (2019) to apply
  • A minimum of 70% in English and math (5th through 6th grade)
  • A minimum of 70% in Numeracy and Literacy in the Foundation Scholarship Exam. (After the application process, they select the eligible candidates and invite them to take the scholarship exam. Hence, they then use the test results with the primary or elementary school results to select the candidates for the interview).
  • Candidates must not be older than 12 years and no younger than 11 in Grade 6.
  • Demonstrate a financial need
  • Demonstrate the following business features:

  • Achievement Excellence: Set high standards for themselves

Selection Process

  • Complete and submit your application forms and all supporting documents before September 13, 2019.
  • All applicants will receive an SMS to acknowledge receipt of their application within one month from the closing date.
  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on their academic performance and financial need.
  • Selected applicants will be called within two months after the deadline and invited to take an exam. Candidates not selected will be informed by SMS.
  • Selected candidates will be invited to interviews. Individual interviews take place between February and March 2020
  • Subsequently, the selected candidates will be invited to psychometric tests.
  • In case of success in the psychometric phase, the Foundation will recommend candidates to placement schools.
  • Recommended candidates will be invited to placement schools for interviews.
  • Candidates whose recommendations have been approved by training schools will receive the scholarship.
  • Once the scholarship is awarded, the Foundation, the placement school, and the administrator’s custodian sign a memorandum of understanding.
  • All successful applicants will know which school they will attend the following year in August 2020.
  • From the interview to the psychometric tests and to the final selection, all communications are made by telephone. The selection process takes about eleven months in total.

In which countries does the Foundation provide Scholarships?

The Foundation runs in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Swaziland. High school Scholarships for Grade 8 to Grade 12 learners are offered in South Africa only.

While Post-Matric Scholarships are offered in Botswana and Swaziland.

These Botswana and Swaziland Scholarships are specifically offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship. And to those who require a post-Matric qualification to get access to a South African university.

Why does the Foundation not operate in other African countries?

The Foundation operates in countries where Allan Gray Limited is represented and, therefore, offers opportunities to citizens of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Swaziland.

Can I apply at any time during my high school career to become an Allan Gray Scholar?

No.

There is only one opportunity to become part of the Scholarship program, and that is to apply when in Grade 6 in South Africa.

We select and support learners for the whole duration of high school starting in Grade 8, provided they maintain their marks.

When can I apply for the Scholarship opportunity?

If you are a South African you can only apply when you are in Grade 6. Also, if you apply in Grade 5 or Grade 7, your application will not be accepted.

Equally, if you are from Botswana or Swaziland, you cannot apply for a full high school Scholarship. The Scholarship in these countries is for post-Matric only.

Can I choose which school I would like to attend?

They work with a select group of partner schools and will only provide funding for learners who choose to attend one of these schools. Candidates will receive all the necessary communication from the Foundation. The Foundation places the Scholars, so they don’t need to find a school or make contact with the school until the Foundation tells them to.

Do I have to stay at a boarding house?

There is a strong likelihood of boarding. However, each of their Scholar’s personal circumstances is taken into consideration before recommendations are made.

If I am selected as an Allan Gray Orbis Scholar, does this mean that after high school I will automatically receive university funding?

No.

Though Upon successful graduation from the Allan Gray Orbis Scholarship, you will have to follow the standard application process specified for your country to become an Allan Gray Orbis Candidate Fellow.

Can I lose my Scholarship once I receive it?

Yes.
It’s possible to lose your Scholarship should you fail to maintain the academic requirements. So also, should you fail to keep to the agreed-upon terms and conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement that governs the Scholarship Award.

However, we take an active interest in all our Scholars and will do our best to give you all the support you need to maintain and excel in your studies.

Can I change placement schools once I am a Scholar?

Actually No.
Upon acceptance of the Scholarship, you will not be able to change from one school to another.
