The University Of Ghana UG, Legon – Accra

The University of Ghana, the premier university and the largest Public Universities in Ghana and was founded as the University College of the Gold Coast by Ordinance on August 11, 1948, for the purpose of providing and promoting university education, learning and research.

As a University poised to distinguish itself in the area of research to make an impact at the national and international level, the University has launched a new Strategic Plan.

This new strategic plan (2014-2024) is intended to consolidate the gains made from the review of the University’s mission and practices and situate these within the context of a very dynamic environment of higher education in Ghana and beyond.

University for Development Studies – UDS Tamale

The University for Development Studies UDS was established in May 1992 by PNDC Law 279 to blend the academic world with that of the community in order to provide constructive and meaningful interaction between the two for the total Development of Northern Ghana, in particular, and Ghana as a whole. It began academic work in September 1993 with the first batch of thirty-nine (39) students admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, (FOA), Nyankpala.

The University’s principal objective is to address and find solutions to the environmental problems and socio-economic deprivations that have characterized northern Ghana in particular and are also found in some rural areas throughout the rest of the country.

University of Mines and Technology – UMAT, Tarkwa

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) started as the Tarkwa Technical Institute (TTI) on 3rd November 1952 but was officially Public Universities in Ghana and was commissioned by the Government of Ghana, more precisely by His Excellency the Governor of the Gold Coast, Sir Charles Noble Arden Clarke, on 7th October 1953. In 1961, the Government, upon the advocacy of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, redefined the mission of TTI to incorporate the training of mining technicians and other middle-level manpower for the country’s mining and related industries.

In 1961, it was reorganized to become the Tarkwa School of Mines (TSM) to train the required manpower for the mining and allied industries in Ghana. In 1976, the Government took cognizance of the capability of TSM and its strategic location, Tarkwa, which is at the centre of mining activities in the country. As this location gave TSM a special strength for mining education, TSM was affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as a faculty of the University so as to enable TSM offer degree, diploma and certificate programmes in mining and related fields.

University of health and allied science, Ho

The University of Health and Allied Sciences is also Public Universities in Ghana and was established by an Act of Parliament (ACT 828 of December 2011) as a public university in Ghana. The main campus including the central administration is in Ho. A second campus is to be located in Hohoe.

The UNIVERSITY OF ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is also Public Universities in Ghana and was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 830, 2011 on December 31, 2011. The University is a public funded national institution which seeks to provide leadership and management of energy and natural resources and be a centre of excellence in these critical areas. The University approaches its programmes and research emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and taking into account, areas such as economics, law and policy, management, science, technology and engineering as well as social and political issues affecting energy and natural resources.

Prior to the passing of the bill establishing the University into law, the then President, the late Prof. J.E.A Mills set up a National Task Force Planning Committee on January 8, 2010 with the mandate to develop, organize and supervise the implementation of the programme for the establishment of the two new Universities at Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions. The 24-member Task Force was chaired by Prof. Samuel Kofi Sefah-Dedeh, a former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Services, the University of Ghana with Hon. Dr. Christina Amoako-Nuamah of the Office of the President, Castle Osu as the convener. Public Universities in Ghana Following the recommendations of the Committee, the former President, Prof. J.E.A Mills cut the sod for the commencement of the University at Sunyani on February 8, 2011. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology also handed over its campus of Faculty of Forest Resources Technology to the UENR at a colourful ceremony at Sunyani on June 7, 2012. When fully operational, the University would have six schools.

University of professional studies – Accra

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is a is also Public Universities in Ghana that provides both academic and business professional education in Ghana. With over forty (40) years of experience, the University has gained a reputation as the oldest professional accountancy and management tuition provider having many of its products in key leadership positions in Ghana and elsewhere.   The University was the first and is still the only public institution with the mandate to offer both academic degrees and provide training for higher Professional education in Ghana.  The University currently has a student population of about ten thousand (10,000)

The University was founded in 1965 as a private professional business education tuition provider and was taken over by the government in 1978 by the Institute of Professional Studies Decree, 1978 (SMCD 200). It was subsequently established as a tertiary institution with a mandate to provide tertiary and professional education in the academic disciplines of Accountancy, Management and other related areas of study by the Institute of Professional Studies Act, (Act 566), 1999.

Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration – GIMPA

GIMPA is also Public Universities in Ghana and was established in 1961 as a joint Ghana Government/United Nations Special Fund Project. It was originally called the Institute of Public Administration, established to train public servants with administrative and professional competence to plan and administer national, regional and local services.

In 1999/2000, GIMPA was among a group of 200 public sector organisations in Ghana earmarked under the World Bank-funded Public Sector Reform Programme to be taken off Government Subvention. GIMPA was subsequently selected under the National Institutional Reform Programme to be transformed, notably to be self-financing. Subsequently, GIMPA was taken off Government Subvention in 2001.
